Certified translation is handled remotely: you send the document from Porto and receive it translated and certified
Anyone who needs a birth certificate, academic qualifications or a criminal record translated in Porto usually starts by looking for an address. There is no need. Certified translation does not require the client to attend in person: the document is sent by email or photographed, the translation is produced and certified, and the result is returned by registered post or in digital form, depending on the criteria of the receiving authority. At GT-Traduções we have worked this way for four decades from our office in Loulé for clients across the country.
That is a practical difference for anyone working, studying or fighting the deadlines of an ongoing procedure. What determines the timeframe is not the distance, but the type of certification required and the availability of an appointment when an apostille is needed.
Are you in Porto and need a certified translation?
Send us the scanned document and we will tell you what type of certification your procedure requires, the timeframe and the cost, before anything begins.

How it works from Porto
Requirements established and document sent digitally
Before quoting, we clarify whether the procedure calls for standard translation, notary certification, CIOL certification or an apostille — and in which order. A legible photograph or a PDF of the document is all we need at this stage.
Certification arranged by us
The translation is certified by a notary, lawyer or solicitor, or through the CIOL route where the destination accepts it. At that stage we need the original document or a certified copy, which you can send us by registered mail from your local post office — without having to travel.
Delivered where you need it
By registered post to the address you give us, in digital form or paper copy where the procedure requires. We also send an advance copy by email.
Do you have a deadline to meet?
Tell us the closing date of your procedure and we will confirm, before starting, whether it can be met and the conditions.

Frequently asked questions
Do I have to travel to hand in the document?
No. A legible photograph or a PDF is enough for us to quote and to translate. For certification, we need to receive the original document or a certified copy. You can send it by registered post, with tracking.
Can I keep the original and send a certified copy?
Yes. If you would rather keep the original document, you can obtain a certified copy at a CTT post office before sending it to us: for the purposes of certifying the translation, that copy carries the same legal weight as the original.
How do I receive the certified translation?
By registered post to the address you give us, in digital form or paper copy, or both — depending on the criteria of the receiving authority. We confirm this with you before delivery.
Is the timeframe longer because I am in Porto?
No. The timeframe depends on the type of document and the certification required, not on the distance. Where an apostille is needed, the timeframe includes the appointment with the competent authority. In our quotation we state precisely how long we need to complete the work.
Which languages do you work with?
English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Arabic and Mandarin, among others. Tell us the language pair and we will confirm availability and timeframe.
Is CIOL certification suitable for my procedure?
CIOL certification derives from our standing as qualified members of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, for the Portuguese–English combination, and it is widely accepted by European and international bodies. We confirm with you whether it is suitable in your particular case.
